Managing Your Fear

Monday, November 9th, 2009

I may walk through valleys as dark as death, but I won’t be afraid. You are with me, and your shepherd’s rod makes me feel safe.

Psalm 23:4

When Steve Rutenbar was in Ukraine, he went to visit a friend in Kiev who lived on the 12th floor of an apartment building. Since the elevator was not working, he had to walk up twelve flights of poorly lighted stairs. Steve had only gone a short way when he heard footsteps behind him. Someone was there. Sensing danger and remembering colleagues who had been mugged in similar situations, he quickened his steps. The faster he walked, the faster were the steps of the person behind him. A gentle caring man who stands 6′7″ and weighs over 350 pounds, Steve whirled around and crouched in a karate position ready to defend himself. Then he saw the person coming up the stairs behind him–a little girl about twelve years of age.

That’s the way with most of our fears. They stalk us and loom much larger in our thinking. When fear seems to stalk you, don’t turn and run. Confront it, challenge it, and contain it with God’s help.
